Nature’s Dream

Nature is asleep. You watch her sleeping soundly, her head tucked under her arms, unconsciously protecting long braids of flowers and vines. Her breathing is slow, so slow that you have to press your ear to the cool moss of her chest in order to hear it. The moss tickles your ear. You pull away, watching Nature dream with a smile on your face.

She dreams of World Peace. Of a time that has long passed, when you were nothing but dust. A time when her domain was unconfined, when trees reached the heights now controlled by skyscrapers. A time when every surface was green, brown, and blue—there was no grey. There was no pollution. There was no anger, no cruelty, no murder. There was no you.

Nature dreams of your demise. The time is not long passed but long awaited. She will not always be dormant. One day, she will reclaim her domain, and with it, you.

She will fill you with her plants as you now fill pots and boxes. She will sow your ribcage with roses, pretty, bloody petals. The thorns will cut your lungs but you will have no air to scream, because your breath will be replaced with soil, rich, thirsty earth.

You will not scream, but you will cry, Nature will see to that. She will need your tears to water her plants, and your lifeblood to sustain her garden. Flesh is good for growth.

One day, you will thank her. Through your sacrifice, she will make the world beautiful again. Green, brown, and blue will reign supreme. There will be no grey—not visibly. Skyscrapers will fall, crumbling to dust, and you will cry out Nature’s praise.

Or perhaps you will sleep. You will curl up into a little ball, covering your head, as if you can hide from her. She might let you, though the chances are slim.

She could never hide from you.

Perhaps you will sleep soundly, breathing slow. In sleep, you will find escape, for only asleep can you dream. Dream of a world without green, brown, and blue. A world of grey. A world in which skyscrapers subdue the heights now controlled by trees. A world without Nature.

Perhaps you will dream of World Peace.
