1937 just another boy
Raised in a house with no furniture
Poor but happy, he made himself useful
Farm hand, mechanic, and everything in between
Drank smoke like water
Has the lungs to prove it
1940 just another girl
Raised in a house too small for another
Fatherless, what a scandal
Wouldn’t let it hold her back
A victim of polio but a survivor too
1959 they found each other
Same year they were married
They moved countless times
Each adventure better than the last
Watched their country step on the moon
While they made leaps of their own
Children of the depression
They lived a life of little
So their families could have it all
2021 embarking on their final adventure
Remnants of another time
Unable to throw away expired milk
Or tattered dolls
They call every device a computer
And a wallet a billfold
What a foriegn language they speak
Their grandchildren think
Seeing them only in passing
When they listen to the stories they have to tell
The greatest gift they have left to give
